Leveling and Progression

Character progression in Chatsubo follows a straightforward XP-based system. You earn experience points from various activities, level up automatically when you reach XP thresholds, and unlock new capabilities as you grow stronger. This guide explains how to progress your character from street-level nobody to Night City legend.

How Leveling Works

The Basics

Leveling is automatic and cumulative: - You earn Experience Points (XP) from activities - XP accumulates toward your next level - When you reach the threshold, you level up automatically - XP never decreases - it's permanent progress - Levels range from 1 (starting) to 50 (maximum)

No grinding required: - Play naturally and you'll progress - No daily XP limits - Level gates prevent rushing content - Natural progression through gameplay

Level Brackets

Chatsubo divides progression into four distinct phases:

Bracket Levels Phase Name Max Skill Level
Tutorial 1-5 Learning the Streets 2
Early Game 6-15 Establishing Yourself 5
Mid Game 16-30 Rising Power 8
Late Game 31-50 Night City Legend 10

Each bracket unlocks new capabilities and content.

Earning XP

XP Sources

You earn XP from many activities:

1. Combat Victory - Defeating enemies - Most common XP source - Scales with enemy level - Full XP for victories - Reduced XP for successful fleeing - No daily limits

2. Quest Completion - Finishing quests - Major XP rewards - Story progression - Role-specific quests often give bonuses - No daily limits

3. Skill Use - Practicing skills - Small XP for successful skill checks - Maximum 10 XP per skill per day - Encourages diverse skill use - No daily limits on total skill XP

4. Discovery - Exploring new locations - Finding new taxi stands - Uncovering hidden areas - First-time location bonuses - No daily limits

5. Roleplay - Quality in-character interaction - Staff-awarded XP for excellent RP - Organic storytelling - Community building - No daily limits

6. Social Activities - Interacting with players and NPCs - Building relationships - Successful negotiations - Group activities - No daily limits

7. Crafting - Creating items (Tech role) - Crafting equipment - Successful modifications - Innovation bonuses - No daily limits

XP Scaling

XP rewards scale with level difference:

Combat XP Example: - You (Level 10) vs Enemy (Level 10): 100% XP - You (Level 10) vs Enemy (Level 15): 150% XP (higher risk, higher reward) - You (Level 10) vs Enemy (Level 5): 50% XP (lower challenge, lower reward) - You (Level 10) vs Enemy (Level 1): 0% XP (too easy, no reward)

Optimal XP range: Fight enemies within ±5 levels of your character.

Why scaling exists: - Prevents high-level players from farming low-level content - Encourages appropriate-level challenges - Rewards taking risks against tougher enemies - Keeps progression balanced

No Daily Caps

Unlike many games, Chatsubo has NO daily XP limits: - Play as much as you want - Earn as much XP as your gameplay generates - Natural level gates prevent rushing (skill caps, content access) - Progression feels organic, not artificially throttled

Leveling Up

Automatic Level-Ups

When you reach the XP threshold: 1. You automatically level up 2. Health increases 3. Attribute scaling improves 4. New content/areas may unlock 5. Skill caps may increase (at bracket boundaries) 6. Cyberware tier may unlock

You don't need to do anything - leveling happens automatically.

Level-Up Benefits

Every level grants: - Increased Health - More survivability - Attribute Scaling - Stats become more effective - Progress Toward Next Bracket - Closer to skill cap increases

Bracket transitions grant: - Higher Skill Caps - Train skills to new maximum levels - Cyberware Tier Unlocks - Access to better implants - New Content Access - Higher-tier quests and areas - Reputation Gains - Recognized as more powerful

XP Requirements Per Level

XP needed increases each level: - Level 1→2: 100 XP - Level 5→6: 500 XP - Level 10→11: 1,500 XP - Level 20→21: 5,000 XP - Level 40→41: 20,000 XP

Total XP to reach level 50: ~500,000+ XP

Progression rate: - Levels 1-10: Fast (hours to days) - Levels 11-30: Moderate (days to weeks) - Levels 31-50: Slow (weeks to months)

Cyberware Tiers

Your level determines which cyberware you can install:

Character Level Cyberware Tier Quality
1-5 Tier 1 Basic/Street
6-15 Tier 2 Professional/Quality
16-30 Tier 3 Advanced/Military
31-50 Tier 4 Legendary/Experimental

Why tiers exist: - Prevent low-level characters from becoming overpowered - Create meaningful progression milestones - Ensure equipment matches character advancement - Encourage natural pacing

Cyberware provides: - Attribute increases (primary attribute advancement method) - Special abilities - Combat bonuses - Utility functions

See economy guide for cyberware costs and acquisition.

Progression Strategies

Fast Leveling (Combat Focus)

Best for: Street Samurai, players who want quick progression

Strategy: 1. Focus on combat encounters 2. Fight enemies near your level (±2 levels) 3. Complete combat-heavy quests 4. Maximize XP per hour played

Pros: Fastest leveling Cons: May miss story content, expensive equipment upkeep

Balanced Leveling (Mixed Activities)

Best for: Most players, Fixers

Strategy: 1. Mix combat with quests and exploration 2. Build relationships with NPCs 3. Complete diverse content 4. Enjoy the journey

Pros: Well-rounded experience, good story immersion Cons: Slower than pure combat focus

Slow Leveling (RP and Exploration Focus)

Best for: Roleplayers, Console Cowboys, players who enjoy story

Strategy: 1. Focus on quests and roleplay 2. Minimal combat grinding 3. Deep NPC relationships 4. Thorough exploration

Pros: Rich story experience, community building Cons: Slowest leveling, may feel underpowered

Recommendation: Play how you enjoy! All approaches work.

Checking Your Progress

In-Game Commands

score

Shows your current level, XP, XP to next level, and stats.

status

Detailed character information including total XP earned and progression stats.

Understanding Your XP Display

Typical XP display:

Level: 12
Current XP: 3,450 / 4,200 (next level)
Total XP Earned: 45,780

What it means: - You're level 12 - You need 750 more XP to reach level 13 - You've earned 45,780 total XP across your character's life

Death and XP Loss

Death has minimal XP penalty: - Small XP loss (usually 5-10% of current level progress) - Never lose levels - worst case, delayed level-up - Encourages risk-taking - Death is a learning experience, not a catastrophe

XP loss example: - You're level 10 with 2,500 XP (need 3,000 for level 11) - You die and lose 150 XP - You're now level 10 with 2,350 XP - One or two more fights recovers the loss

Optimization Tips

1. Quest Chains First

Quests often give better XP-per-time than pure grinding. Complete available quests before farming combat.

2. Fight Appropriate Enemies

Enemies ±2 levels give optimal XP. Don't fight level 5 enemies when you're level 15.

3. Group When Possible

Group content often provides bonus XP and is safer/faster than solo.

4. Use Skills Regularly

Skill-use XP is "free" - use your skills naturally and you'll earn passive XP.

5. Don't Rush

Level gates (skill caps, cyberware tiers) mean rushing to high level doesn't help much. Enjoy the journey.

6. Save XP for Skills

Character XP can be invested in skills. Save some XP for important skill increases rather than spending all your NuYen.

Common Questions

Can I lose levels?

No. Levels are permanent. Death may cause minor XP loss but never level loss.

Is there a level cap?

Yes, level 50 is the maximum. Very few players reach this level.

How long to reach max level?

Typically 200-400+ hours of gameplay depending on playstyle. Most players never reach level 50.

Do I need to level quickly?

No. Progress at your own pace. Content is available at all level ranges.

Does my role affect XP gains?

Not directly. All roles earn XP the same way. Different roles just have different XP sources they naturally access (combat vs. hacking vs. social).
