Exploration Guide

Welcome to Night City, choom. This guide will help you navigate the neon-lit streets, discover new locations, and explore the cyberpunk world of Chatsubo safely.

Getting Started with Exploration

After completing the tutorial and creating your character, you'll be at the Chatsubo Bar, your home base. From here, the world is yours to explore!

Your First Steps

  1. Look around - Use look to examine your surroundings
  2. Check exits - Note the available exits in the room description
  3. Talk to NPCs - Many provide quests, information, or services
  4. Explore nearby areas - Start with Night City Street and expand from there

Basic Navigation

Moving Between Rooms

Type the direction you want to go:

Directions: north, south, east, west, up, down

Abbreviated: n, s, e, w, u, d

Example:

north
n
east

Named Exits

Some rooms have special named exits instead of compass directions:

enter
exit
back

Just type the exit name to use it!

Getting Your Bearings

look

Always start by looking around. Room descriptions tell you: - Where you are - What's notable about the location - Available exits - Who and what is present

Pro tip: Some rooms have hidden details you can examine. Try look <object> on anything mentioned in the description!

The Taxi System (Fast Travel)

Once you've discovered locations on foot, you can use the HoverTaxi system for fast travel across Night City.

Finding a Taxi Stand

taxi

This command checks if there's a taxi stand at your current location. If there is: - The location is automatically added to your discovered destinations - You'll see information about using the taxi service

Important: You must visit a taxi stand on foot before you can travel there!

Viewing Your Destinations

taxi list

Alias: taxi destinations

Shows all taxi stands you've discovered. Your current location is highlighted in green.

Taking a Taxi

taxi <destination>

Travel to any discovered location.

Examples:

taxi "Night City Street"
taxi "Black Clinic"
taxi "Chatsubo Bar"

Note: If the destination name has spaces, use quotes!

Taxi System Tips

  1. Explore on foot first - You can't taxi somewhere you haven't visited
  2. Taxi stands are strategic - They're placed at major hubs and important locations
  3. Costs nuyen - Fast travel isn't free (but it's affordable)
  4. Great for returns - Use taxis to get back to quest NPCs or frequently visited spots
  5. Discover everything - Make it a goal to unlock all taxi destinations!

Notable Locations in Night City

Chatsubo Bar (Your Home)

The iconic dive bar where it all begins.

Features: - Ratz the bartender (NPC) - Central social hub - Quest NPCs often hang out here - Safe zone (no combat) - Starting location for new characters

Tips: - Check back often for new NPCs and quests - Great place to meet other players - Ratz sometimes has useful information—talk to him!

Night City Street

The main thoroughfare connecting many locations.

Features: - Dynamic atmospheric descriptions - Multiple exits to shops, clinics, and other areas - Often has wandering NPCs - Taxi stand for fast travel

Tips: - This is your navigation hub—many locations connect here - Pay attention to the atmosphere descriptions—they add immersion - New players should explore exits from here first

Black Clinic

Underground medical facility for when you need patching up.

Features: - Medical services and supplies - Healing available - Discrete entrance (it's underground, after all) - Cyberpunk medical aesthetic

Tips: - Come here when injured or poisoned - NPCs here might have medical-related quests - Street medics and corpo types frequent this location

Electronics Shop

Hardware and technology vendor.

Features: - Cyberdecks and cybern

etic hardware - Tech equipment - Repair services - Tech-focused NPCs

Tips: - Essential for Console Cowboys and Techs - Good place to upgrade your gear - NPCs here often need tech favors

Ramen Stand

Traditional street food vendor.

Features: - Atmospheric food preparation - Counter seating - Immersive sensory descriptions - Casual social spot

Tips: - Great for casual RP - Food items can restore health - Street-level characters often eat here

Safe Exploration Tips

1. Know Your Limits

Some areas have higher-level enemies. If you're new: - Stick to well-populated areas - Avoid suspicious or dangerous-sounding locations - If an area feels too hard, come back later

2. Don't Be Afraid to Die

Death isn't permanent in Chatsubo: - You'll respawn at a safe location - You might lose some items (but not usually) - XP loss is minimal - It's part of learning!

3. Save Your Location

Before venturing into unknown areas: - Make sure you know how to get back - Note taxi stands you've discovered - Use stuck command if truly trapped (10 minute cooldown) - Visit the Clinic Interior and rest to bind your respawn location there

4. Read Room Descriptions Carefully

Descriptions often warn you about danger: - "dark alley" - "abandoned warehouse" - "corporate security checkpoint"

Pay attention to atmosphere and context clues!

5. Talk to NPCs

NPCs often provide: - Quests and objectives - Information about the area - Warnings about dangers - Hints about hidden locations

Use talk <npc> liberally!

Exploration Strategies

The Hub-and-Spoke Method

  1. Return to a safe hub (like Chatsubo Bar or Night City Street)
  2. Explore one direction thoroughly
  3. Return to the hub
  4. Explore another direction

This prevents getting lost and helps you build a mental map.

The Discovery Method

  1. Visit every taxi stand you can find
  2. Unlock fast travel destinations
  3. Use taxis to efficiently explore different areas
  4. Fill in gaps between taxi locations on foot

The Quest-Driven Method

  1. Accept quests from NPCs
  2. Let quest objectives guide your exploration
  3. Discover new areas while completing quests
  4. Natural and rewarding exploration

What to Look For While Exploring

NPCs

  • Quest Givers: Offer missions and rewards
  • Vendors: Sell equipment, items, or services
  • Lore NPCs: Provide world-building and atmosphere
  • Hostile NPCs: Enemies to fight (or avoid!)

Items

  • Quest Items: Required for specific quests
  • Equipment: Weapons, armor, cyberware
  • Consumables: Medkits, food, BTLs (drugs)
  • Lore Objects: Just for atmosphere and immersion

Secrets

  • Hidden Exits: Not always obvious from descriptions
  • Special Details: Examine objects for hidden information
  • Timed Events: Some areas have time-of-day variations

Combat While Exploring

Hostile NPCs

Some NPCs will attack on sight: - Thugs in alleys - Hostile gang members - Malfunctioning security drones - Aggressive wildlife (rare)

How to Handle Combat

Initiate combat.

flee

Escape from combat if things go badly.

Tips: - Check your health with status before and after fights - Use medkits to heal - Flee if you're outmatched - Learn enemy patterns and weaknesses

Getting Lost?

If you don't know where you are:

  1. Use look to see your current location name
  2. Check for familiar exits
  3. Use taxi list to see if you're near a known taxi stand
  4. Taxi to a known location or use stuck if truly trapped
  5. Ask on the newbie channel for directions

Mapping Tips

While Chatsubo doesn't have an auto-map:

  1. Take notes - Sketch a simple map on paper or in a text file
  2. Use landmarks - Remember notable locations
  3. Learn taxi locations - They're your fast travel waypoints
  4. Explore systematically - Don't just wander randomly

Once you're comfortable:

  • Join player groups - Explore dangerous areas with friends
  • Hunt for secrets - Look for hidden rooms and easter eggs
  • Map the entire city - Become a Night City expert
  • Complete all area quests - Master each location
  • Discover lore - Piece together the world's story
